How to test your website on a real phone

Pick one task a customer came to do and try to finish it on your phone. The places you hesitate are where to start.

Start with a task a visitor cares about. Find a class and book a trial, check a store’s hours, or request a quote. Start on the homepage and go as far as you can without creating a real booking or purchase.

Try it the way a customer would

Use the phone you already own. Open a private tab so you don’t benefit from a saved login or a recent visit. Try it once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data. Notice whether the first useful text or button appears while larger images are still loading.

Use one hand for part of the test. Check whether nearby buttons are easy to distinguish and whether a sticky header covers the content you need. Open the keyboard when you reach a form and make sure you can still see the field you’re typing in and the message that explains any error.

Check the moments when people need help

Make one deliberate mistake. Leave a required field blank or enter an email without the domain. Can you see what went wrong, find the field, and fix it without retyping everything?

Then enlarge the text using the browser settings and repeat the task. Look for a menu that clips, a button whose label wraps out of view, or a form you can’t reach. Those are concrete problems you can give to the person fixing the site.

Fix the point where the task breaks

Write down the device, the page, and the action that caused trouble. “On my phone, the keyboard covers the submit button on the quote form” gives someone a place to start. After the fix, try the whole task again on the same phone.
